The lighting of Christmas candles is an important part of the Swedish Christmas tradition. The immediate reason is that we need to create light in our houses during the darkest part of the year, but it is also a symbolic act; the lighting of the Christmas candles marks the beginning of the Christmas celebrations. To light a light for our loved ones is a way to communicate peace and friendship and a shield against darkness.
